Plein sud, a contemporary art centre located in Longueuil, Québec, is dedicated to the showcasing, dissemination and promotion of contemporary art to various audiences.   Its mandate is structured around three main activities: exhibiting, educating and publishing. Plein sud is intended to be a meeting point, a pluralist space where different visions are shared and compared, a sounding board where bold creative energies are given free expression and where it is possible to take risks and speak out. Designed to foster the development and appreciation of contemporary art practices, all of Plein sud’s activities reflect the broad range of approaches upheld within the vast field of art. Plein sud offers exhibitions and publications by artists from diverse backgrounds and generations at various stages of their career.

Every two years Plein sud, as a future-oriented space,  awards a scholarship to artists who have been practising art for under 10 years and, more generally, works to improve the conditions in which professional artists practise.

As a major contributor to critical reflection, Plein sud, through its publishing activities, furthers the inscription of art practices within a historical perspective. Its impressive monographs and artists’ books help artists to achieve recognition.

Rooted in a participatory approach, Plein sud’s educational activities are designed for school and community groups as well as the general public. The educational mandate aims to broaden access to culture, enrich civic experience, and foster cultural understanding through guided activities, creative workshops, and interventions that reflect the diversity of contemporary artistic practices.

An important part of Plein sud’s mandate involves research and the development of theoretical discourse in contemporary art. Plein sud’s publications offer a complementary platform to its exhibitions, contributing in a lasting way to the advancement of knowledge and a deeper understanding of contemporary art.
